ARUNA ANTONELLA HANDA, PhD
I love food, everything to do with it: foraging, growing, visiting markets, discovering new ingredients, reading about food, thinking about it, cooking, and, of course, sharing a meal around a big table with friends, family or strangers.
I was trained in my Italian
mother’s kitchen, where everyday she would cook an amazing dinner,
often with home-baked bread and exquisite presentation. She was and still is an
adventurous cook, who prepares not only Italian dishes but also dishes from
all over the world. A well loved collection of Gourmet magazines and cook books give her
ideas, and the wonderful Kitchener Farmers Market still supplies a host of
local ingredients, including the amazing local German-style charcuterie
and Mennonite cheeses.
My extended family further trained my palate in southern Italian delicacies as well as northern Indian dishes, some of which my Indian father would prepare, especially for company. My culinary training was enhanced by my travels, with extended stays in Saudi Arabia, Trinidad, Switzerland, the UK, France, Mexico, Italy and India.
My work at Alimentary affords me the chance to draw on my experiences as a writer and journalist, a philosopher and lecturer, a cook and caterer, a theatre director and musician, an event planner and activist, a team-builder and strategic planner. I love working with people in all sorts of dynamics, whether as a consultant for food companies interested in catering to the growing special diets sector, or in collaboration with artists and musicians forging new ways to contemplate the future of food. I also work with chefs and food start-ups on product development and marketing.
The initiatives emerge from an examination of the Food System. We propose and then pilot solutions to those broken parts: Office Markets to address distribution; Taste Labs to encourage people to recognize their own expertise in cooking; and the Future Food Salons to address food security: production and distribution.
I lecture and give talks too. Please see our Contact page for more information.
